Getting Started with Bahá’í Children’s Classes

The Grade 1 children's classes are designed to help children approximately five and six years old develop spiritual qualities and build a strong foundation of character.

Rather than simply teaching information, each lesson creates opportunities for children to experience the Word of God through prayers, quotations, stories, songs, and joyful activities. Through these experiences, children gradually develop qualities such as kindness, truthfulness, generosity, and love.

Understanding the Lesson Structure

Each lesson focuses on one spiritual quality and follows a consistent rhythm. This familiar structure helps children feel comfortable while allowing them to learn through repetition, participation, and joyful experiences.

Each lesson includes:

Prayer and reflection
Memorizing a quotation
Singing together
Exploring a spiritual quality
Hearing a story

Closing prayers

Opening and Closing with prayer

Prayer creates a calm and reverent beginning and ending to each class. Children gradually become familiar with prayers and develop an appreciation for turning their hearts toward God.

Learning Prayers and Quotations

Children learn short prayers and quotations from the Bahá’í Writings through repetition, explanation, and encouragement. Teachers help children understand the meaning of the words while making memorization a joyful experience.

Stories That Inspire

Stories, especially stories from the life of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, help children see spiritual qualities in action. Through storytelling, children discover how kindness, generosity, patience, and love can be expressed in everyday life.

Songs That Bring Joy

Songs help children participate actively and remember spiritual concepts in a joyful way. Music creates unity in the classroom and brings energy to the learning experience.

Games and Creative Activities

Cooperative games and creative activities allow children to explore spiritual qualities through movement, imagination, and friendship. These activities encourage participation while reinforcing the lesson theme.

Creating a Loving Classroom Environment

The most important part of every class is creating an atmosphere where children feel welcomed, valued, and loved. Through patience, encouragement, and joyful participation, teachers help children develop confidence and a sense of belonging.
